How to configure Protonmail Bridge Outlook?

The ProtonMail Bridge application is for paid users and it enables the integration between your ProtonMail account and an email client like Protonmail Bridge Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail. ProtonMail Bridge runs in the background and encrypts all your email messages. In general, this app is compatible with email clients that support IMAP and SMTP.

Download and Install the ProtonMail Bridge application

  • Step : 1 Download the ProtonMail Bridge application from the manufacturer website.
  • Step : 2 Double-click the downloaded file and carry out the instructions on the screen to install it.

Add your ProtonMail account to the ProtonMail Bridge application

  • Step : 1 Launch the ProtonMail Bridge application on your Windows computer.
  • Step : 2 Click the Add Account option. 
  • Step : 3 Enter the ProtonMail email address in the Username field and click Next.
  • Step : 4 Type your email account password in the Password field and click Next.
  • Step : 5 Now, you will see the Connected message on the screen. This indicates that your email account has been successfully connected to the Bridge application.
  • Step : 6 Note: By default, you will be in a combined mode. If necessary, you can switch to split addresses mode. When you are in a combined mode, you can add only one email address in the Protonmail Bridge Outlook client. 

ProtonMail account server settings

  • Step : 1 Before adding your email account to the Outlook email client, you have to know the server settings.
  • Step : 2 The IMAP and SMTP details of your ProtonMail account are given below.
  • Step : 3 Incoming (IMAP) server - 127.0.0.1
  • Step : 4 IMAP port - 1143
  • Step : 5 Outgoing (SMTP) server - 127.0.0.1
  • Step : 6 SMTP port - 1025

Configure the Outlook email client

The steps to add your Protonmail Bridge Outlook in the Outlook 2019 and 2013 email clients are given on this page.

Steps to add in Outlook 2019:

  • Step : 1 Open the Outlook 2019 email client.
  • Step : 2 Click File -> Add Account.
  • Step : 3 In the Email address field, type your ProtonMail email address.
  • Step : 4 Click Advanced options and select the Let me set up my account manually checkbox.
  • Step : 5 Select the Connect option.
  • Step : 6 Choose the IMAP option.
  • Step : 7 Provide the IMAP account details correctly and click Next.
  • Step : 8 Enter your Bridge password in the Password field and click Connect.
  • Step : 9 If you see the Internet Security Warning prompt dialog box, click the Yes option.
  • Step : 10 This will add your ProtonMail account to the Outlook 2019 email client.
  • Step : 11 Navigate to the File tab. 
  • Step : 12 Go to the Account Settings drop-down menu and choose Account Settings.
  • Step : 13 Choose the ProtonMail account and click Change.
  • Step : 14 Select Don’t save copies of sent items -> Purge items when switching folders while online.
  • Step : 15 Now, Protonmail Bridge Outlook 2019 is ready to use ProtonMail Bridge.

Steps to add in Outlook 2013

  • Step : 1 Launch the Outlook 2013 email client.
  • Step : 2 Navigate to the File tab and click the Account button.
  • Step : 3 Click New -> Manual setup or additional server types -> Next -> POP or IMAP -> Next.
  • Step : 4 Enter the ProtonMail account details and click More Settings on the Add Account screen.
  • Step : 5 Note: You should not use the Bridge generated password in the Password field.
  • Step : 6 In the Outgoing Server tab, select the following options.
  • Step : 7 My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
  • Step : 8 Use same settings as my incoming mail server
  • Step : 9 In the Advanced tab, provide the IMAP and SMTP port details correctly.
  • Step : 10 Navigate to Sent Items and select the Do not save copies of sent items checkbox.
  • Step : 11 Go to Deleted Items and select Purge items when switching folder while online.
  • Step : 12 Click OK.
  • Step : 13 Select Next on the Add Account screen.
  • Step : 14 In the Internet Security Warning dialog box, select Yes.
  • Step : 15 Now, you can access your Protonmail Bridge Outlook 2013.
